The Republican Party's dirty trick squad is working full time in Southern California to steal the 2008 presidential election. California politics are singular in scope and importance. If the Republicans play jiggery-pokery with the electoral college delegates from Alabama, it's unfair, but not terminal to the national election's validation. With a big slug of electoral votes going to the winner in a state like California any playing with the allotment without making the same changes in all states just gives the Republicans almost twenty electoral college votes that otherwise they wouldn't get. The amplification of power that the electoral college system, and constitutional amendment procedure give the small states virtually guarantees no reform.
The end run initiative that allots the electors by who holds a majority in each congressional district. On the face of it this sounds fair. The truth is that in passing their initiative California will be entering a poker game playing pinochle. All other states will be allocating their electors in the old winner take all system, and California will be splitting her strength.
The Republicans have screwed up the country, and now it's time for them to take their medicine. Quit squirming and making excuses and find a nice place in the wilderness, boys. It'll be a while before the electorate lets you back indoors.
